Just a Quick Apology

I am so sorry for the lack of crafty, decorating, DIY-ing posts lately.

I am in the process of attempting to take care of some pretty technical stuff all on my own.  Something that was supposed to be so easy so isn’t.  I am hoping for all my time in front of the screen rather than crafting will pay off.  And soon!  It will be so pretty when it does!

Then there’s the days when I have all intentions of doing something fabulous and awesome and then life happens.  I hate when life doesn’t go the way it’s written in my Erin Condren Life Planner.

Don’t worry, I have some ideas up my sleeve and my next decorating project in my head.

Thanks for sticking with me.  Means so much!

In the meantime you can make sure you’re following along on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.  Just check out those cute little buttons up there on the right.  Super easy!

Baby Blanket {Can I Make One?}

A very dear friend of mine is expecting a little girl in March and I would love, love, love to make a baby blanket/quilt.  When I was little my Blankie {Yup, I went there.} was my most prized possession.  It was cozy and had a satin trim that I was in love with.  I would love to make something just as special for Baby S.

 Now, I’m not talking all quilty with patches and all.  That’s a little beyond my skills at the moment.  I’m definitely thinking cozy and I would like to add a satin trim.  I of course consulted Pinterest for my research and found a couple ideas.

Baby Blanket

Doesn’t this blanket from HowDoes She just look so stinking cozy?

The tutorial seems easy enough.  I’ve never used minky fabric before but I can sew a darn good straight line.

I found this tutorial for sewing a satin edge on Instructables.

Makes me a little nervous since I have never sewn with satin and my machine refuses to do a zig zag stitch.  She’s moody. Oh, and flames are involved.  I don’t do fire.

What do you think?  Can I do it?  Any tips for me?

Organizing Week {Round Up}

Did you celebrate Organization Week with me?  What did you get organized?

Let’s do a little Organization Round Up

Started the week with some {pin}spiration from Pinterest.

Loved all the ideas for small containers within the drawer to keep things organized.

The first thing I tackled was the junk drawer.  Lord knows it needed to be organized.

It is so much easier to find everything we need now.  This drawer will never be a junky junk drawer again!

Because of my {lack} of organization when it comes to my jewelry I got really good at untangling necklaces.

With my organized jewelry it isn’t a struggle to find the piece I want to wear.  I even found things I forgot I had.

I admit, I have a problem with collecting hair product.

But, I didn’t want to admit I had a problem with storing my hair product.

With a little switching around, everything is together and the bobby pin graveyard at the bottom of the drawer is no more.

I had attempted to organize my make up before, but my system wasn’t working.

I kept with the plastic containers but downsized so each item had its spot.

I hope you got to celebrate with me for Organization Week.  If not, I hope I inspired you to get organized.  It really is an amazing process to get rid of the old and have a clean, clear place for everything.

 Of course I would have loved to buy new shelving or an amazing jewelry box, but I wanted to keep it simple and cheap.  I did all of this for under $30.  Shop your own house for jars or containers that can be repurposed and wander the aisles of the dollar store, Home Goods and Marshalls for affordable options.

Don’t allow yourself to get overwhelmed.  Focus on one spot at a time and your organization will go smoothly.

Would love to see what you accomplished with organizing.  Send me an email, Facebook comment or Tweet.

Organizing Week {Hair Products and Make Up}

Hair Product and Make Up Organization

Hair Product and Make Up Edition

Let’s Start with my hair products.

Hair Product and Make Up Organization

Please don’t judge the amount of hair product I own.  I have curly unruly hair that needs different product depending on the day/weather/time of year/where I’m going.

As you can see, the bottom drawer of my side of the vanity was an endless pit of product thrown in.  Oh, and about a bazillion hair ties and bobby pins.

 {If I ever go missing, please follow the trail of bobby pins and you will find me.}

This area needed a complete overhaul.  So much so that I moved where I store my hair product all together.

Hair Product and Make Up Organization

Ahhh.  Clean, organized and everything together.

This basket was in the cabinet under my sink with my hair dryer and travel bags.  I moved the travel bags to the bottom drawer formally known as the product pit.  Now everything can stand up and be seen.  No more digging and throwing things around.

Do you recognize those two tall containers?  Yup, they’re empty Crystal Light containers.  Finally found a use for them!  They hold hair ties and bobby pins.

It is so nice to be able to bring the basket out when I’m doing my hair and put it out of sight when I am finished.

My make up wasn’t nearly as bad as my hair products.

Hair Product and Make Up Organization

I had made an attempt to organize my make up better last year.  I took it out of the gross make up bag and put in a clear plastic organized container that can be wiped clean.  It worked for a bit, but just got out of hand after awhile.

I wasn’t able to see everything I had, things spilled and I still had the super waterproof mascara I wore for our wedding three and a half years ago.  It was time to move on.

Hair Product and Make Up Organization

Beautiful!  I still kept with the plastic organizing containers, but downsized so every thing had its spot.  I found these containers as a set at Marshalls.  They work perfectly for what I need and are easy to keep clean.

 I threw away old and barely used things that were just taking up space.  I have a container for eyes, lips and face keeping like products together.  I think this system will work MUCH better than before.  It is clear what I have and where it goes.

It is so much easier getting ready now that things are organized and in their place.

Jewelry Storage Edition

Jewelry Organization

Mess #1

Jewelry Organization

Mess #2

I mean, I had good intentions with this jewelry storage mess.

I found the little bird, tree, nest, branches thing at Home Goods a few years ago. Initially it worked for my every day, and mostly worn jewlery. A few pair of earrings in the nest, some rings and bracelets from the branches. It looked cute on my dresser. Perfect, right?

To organize the other things that I didn’t wear as much I bought a storage system at Michael’s.

Jewelry Organization

The little drawers were perfect and it sit nicely on a shelf in our closet.

Then life happened. I can tell you I have gotten really good at untangling necklaces though.

I couldn’t take it anymore!! I had to do something!

I did like the concept of my storage. Something on my dresser for my every day and most worn pieces and then something in the closet for the things I didn’t wear as often. So, I started how every good organization project should start, I dumped and purged.

I took everything out and separated it by type on the kitchen table and got rid of old, broken and out of style pieces. Then I decided what needed to be in the drawers and what could sit on my dresser.

Jewelry Organization

Are you surprised I used a cake plate? I was wandering Home Goods for something pretty and functional to sit on my dresser and spotted this simple tiered cake plate. It works perfectly! Rings and earrings on top, bracelets in the middle and necklaces and watches on the bottom. The best part is, I can see everything I have, nothing gets tangled and it doesn’t look like a gigantic mess on my dresser. Win, win and win!

Now what to do with those drawers….

I decided to keep each drawer separated by jewelry type.

Jewelry Organization

Using dollar store containers I was able to keep things together and organized. Now I can see all my beautiful, bangle jewels!

Jewelry Organization

The little white ramekins from the dollar store are perfect to keep earrings and rings together. Since the drawers are deep it is nice to be able to stack them and move them around if needed. The empty space was great to lay watches. {Do I have a watch problem?} In this drawer I also have all my nicer things and important to me pieces tucked away in protective pouches. I can’t believe I had just thrown some of those things in the drawers! Shame on me!

Jewelry Organization

My biggest tangled mess was necklaces. Dollar store containers to the rescue again! So nice to be able to pull something out and not have anything else attached to it! But wait, there’s more! I have a few statement necklaces that I wasn’t sure what to do with.

Jewelry Organization

I decided to hang them from the side! I had bought 3M picture hanging hooks awhile back and never used them. They are perfect for the cause! I set them on top and hung the necklaces from the hook. The best part is, by the love of gravity, I didn’t even have to attach the hooks.

Jewelry Organization

The last drawer is sort of random. In here I keep important things like my first license and college ID, and then really important things like the box my engagement ring came in. We all need that random jewelry drawer for important things. Come on, admit it. I also keep containers and pouches I like to use for travel in here too.

This organization project took me a little longer than expected, but it was so worth it. Everything has its place, I can find things and nothing is a tangled mess anymore!

How do you organize your jewelry?

Organizing Week {Junk Drawer}

Monograms and Makeovers National Organizing Week

Junk Drawer Edition

Junk Drawer Before

Let me start this off with saying that from the start, this poor drawer didn’t have a chance.  Before we even moved into the house, my dad had created the junk drawer during construction.  I’m not blaming him.  I could have and should have changed it long ago.  But you know, life happens.  I’m so ashamed by this.  I hate opening it and I just force it shut.  I had no idea I had batteries in here!

Organizing Containers

While in Home Goods searching for some organizational gold, I found these.  I mean they were made for the junk drawer.  And they were only $5.99.  That is 2 large, 2 long and 3 small containers for $5.99.  Amazing!  Oh, and they fit perfectly into the drawer and interlock.  Amazingly perfect!

Junk Drawer After

Can you hear the angels singing from heaven?  Look at that!  It is beautiful!  Every little thing has it’s place.  I highly recommend these organizational containers.  Go to Home Goods and treat yourself and your junk drawer.  Now.

I can open the drawer and find what I need without rummaging.  I can shut the drawer without stuffing.  It is beautiful.

How’s the status of your junk drawer?

Organizing Week {Pinspiration}

Monograms and Makeovers National Organizing WeekHappy Monograms and Makeovers National Organizing Week!!

I get so stinking excited over organizing.  It may be a little bit of an obsession.  This week I’ll be sharing with you how I organized my junk drawer, jewelry and makeup and hair products.  I’ll show you the pretty, organized after, but also the not so pretty before.

To get in the groove of organizing and for some inspiration I turned to Pinterest of course.

The repurpose of a silverware drawer organizer is so smart and practical.  It is a great way to divide the space and allow for larger items.

How adorable are those little tea cups?  For dainty things like jewelry, they are so perfect.  I’m always seeing tea cups at the thrift stores.  So it is perfect for organizing on a budget.

I used to keep my makeup in a makeup bag, but that wasn’t working for me so I switched to a plastic container that fit in the drawer last year.  That isn’t really working either.  The smaller compartments allow to keep everything together and can be easily cleaned.

This drawer organizer can be adjusted for the size of the drawer, which makes perfect sense.

I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time throwing away my Crystal Light containers.  I also have a hard time finding a use for the ones I’ve hoarded.  I’m thinking they’ll be perfect to keep small items together with a lid so nothing gets misplaced.

I like the idea of using clear containers.  It keeps things seamless, but together in the drawer.

This “junk drawer” is perfect.  I’m hoping mine looks like this when it is finished.  Every little compartment and it’s contents have their space.  No more fighting to get the drawer closed!

The plastic baskets are great for any drawer, for any purpose and can be found at the dollar store.  Budget organizing, what could be better than that?

What are your favorite ways to organize?  Would love to see!

Getting Pumped to Organize!

If I could have any job in the world I would want to be a professional organizer.  How fun is it to purge, organize and then stare at the organization in all its beauty?  As much as I love to organize and for everything to have its place, there are a few areas in our house that need a little TLC.

One of my goals for 2013 was to organize better.  So, next week is going to be Monograms and Makeovers National Organizing Week!

Monograms and Makeovers National Organizing Week

Come on, you know you want to celebrate with me!  I’m going to tackle the mess that is my jewelry, how I store my hair products and makeup and the damn junk drawer.

If you have any tips, tricks or systems of your own that work I would love to hear about them!

Being Social

I kid and say I was very shy until 2004.  I had my first job out of college coordinating special events and was forced to come out of my shy shell.

    Now, with starting Monograms and Makeovers I’m feeling like I’m back in 2004 being forced out of my comfort box a bit.  I am vowing to put myself out there more, to comment on fellow bloggers posts and Facebook pages, Tweet more and well, be more social when it comes to social media.

This little baby blog of mine is in a major growth stage right now.  I get excited at page views that most existing blogs probably get in five minutes.  But hey, everyone has to start somewhere, right?

So, if you could help a girl out and follow along with me on this adventure of mine I would absolutely love it!  See those cute little social media buttons up on the top right?  Please, click away and become a Facebook Fan, a Twitter or Instagram Follower, subscriber, check out my Pinterest Boards, whatever you’d like.  Tell you’re friends too!

If you have a baby blog yourself, or have an awesome, kick butt grown up blog please comment, let me know, share away.  I’d love to follow you back too!

For the Love of Decorating {Valentine’s Day}

Valentine's Day DecoratingI’ve mentioned before that I don’t typically decorate for Valentine’s Day.  But, this year after all the Christmas decorations were put away I decided I liked the new living room with a little pizzaz to it.  So, I made a Valentine’s wreath for the front door and added a few cute accessories to the room.  I’m taking full advantage of being able to decorate using pink while I can!

Valentine's Hearts

I love this little silver bowl I scored over the summer for $10 at the thrift store.  My mom happens to have one just like that was my great grand father’s.  I couldn’t resist filling it with some glittery hearts I found at Dollar Tree.  It just so happens to be sitting on our wedding album and wedding keepsake box.  {How Romantic!}

Valentine's Apothecary Jars

These apothecary jars are so versatile.  Best decorating accessory investment ever.  Michael’s had the festive crinkle shredded paper that I used to fill the jars for Valentine’s Day.  Also gave me the perfect opportunity to decorate with my glitter votives.  Love a good sparkle!

Valentine's Free Printable

Thanks to Pinterest I found this adorable free printable.  So cute, right?

Valentine's Tree

You may have heard about this little white tree I found at Michael’s for $6.47.  Score!  It had some holiday decorations on it that I took off and added the cute felt heart garland from Dollar Tree and added some of the crinkle paper I had left over from the apothecary jars.  I had to of course incorporate a cake plate somehow.  The whole thing is just a perfect $7.47 gem.

Do you decorate for Valentine’s Day?  Would love to see!
